Select entry method: Basic Advanced

Basic: This entry method is ideal if you moved through the ranks at a standard rate of progression and did not have any breaks in service. Simply enter the date you began your military service and the date you separated.

Advanced: This entry method allows you to enter multiple, non-consecutive military service periods, and a specific grade/rank for each. This is ideal if your military career includes breaks in service, accelerated promotions, demotions, or a change of status (enlisted to officer, etc.).

*Both entry methods calculate an unofficial estimate of your military service earnings and the deposit required to apply your military service time towards your federal civilian retirement.

Please note that Warrant Officers and Officers with pay grade designations O-1E, O-2E, and O-3E may be required to use the Advanced entry method.

Basic Advanced

Branch Select the branch of the Armed Forces in which you served.

Basic Advanced

Grade Select your grade for this entry period of service. It can be found on your DD214, block 4a.

From Date Select the beginning date of this period of your military service. If an exact date is not known, you may use an estimated date for the purposes of this calculator. Alternatively, it can be found on your DD214, block 12i.

To Date Select the end date of this period of your military service. If an exact date is not known, you may use an estimated date for the purposes of this calculator.

Federal Employment Start Date Your Federal Employment Start Date is the date your began serving as a non-military federal civilian employee. This date determines interest rates and accrual of interest on your service deposit. If an exact date is not known, you may use an estimated date for the purposes of this calculator.

Federal Retirement Plan Civilian Federal Retirement Plan (FERS - Federal Employee Retirement System, or CSRS - Civil Service Retirement System) information may be found on your LES or pay statement. In most cases, Federal employees who first entered covered service on and after January 1, 1987 are covered under FERS, and those before January 1, 1987 are covered under CSRS. If in doubt, call your Human Resources Office.

Estimated Years to Retirement This is the estimated number of years from today's date that you plan to retire. This number is used to calculate your estimated bi-weekly payroll deduction.

Current Annual Base Rate of Pay Your Current Annual Base Rate of Pay is your annual rate of pay excluding bonuses or overtime pay. This number is used to estimate your total lifetime pension earnings.

Separation Date Separation date is your date of discharge from active duty. If an exact date is not known, you may use an estimated date for the purposes of this calculator. Alternatively, it can be found on your DD214, block 12b, discharge orders or field 9 of your separation LES.

Separation Grade Separation grade is the pay grade (i.e., E-5, O-4, etc.) at the time of your discharge from active duty. It can be found on your DD214, block 4a or in field 3 of your last active duty LES.

Estimated Years to Retirement This is the estimated number of years from today's date that you plan to retire. This number is used to calculate your estimated bi-weekly payroll deduction.
